Lebanese Shouraba Il Banadoora (Cream of Tomato Soup) Recipe

2 1/2 c Tomatoes, canned
1/8 t Baking soda
1 T Onion – minced
2 T Butter
1/4 t Celery seed
3 T Flour
1/2 t Sugar
2 t Salt
1/2 t Sugar
1/8 t Pepper, black
1/2 ea Bay leaf
2 c Milk
1 ea Clove, whole


Cook the tomatoes,onion,celery seed,1/2 teaspoon salt,sugar,bay leaf and clove together for 5 minutes.Sieve and then add soda.Melt butter in double boiler. Add flour, 1-1/2 teaspoons salt and pepper.Add milk and stir until thick.Add tomato mixture gradually,stirring constantly.Heat 1 minute,stirring constantly.Serve
